Thame - a place in fencing history

Ever heard of James Figg? Born in Thame in 1695, he was to be acclaimed as England’s first boxing champion. But as well as being famous for his boxing, he was a fencing master with a successful fencing school in London (so successful that the advertising for his school was designed by William Hogarth) and played a significant role in popularising fencing in England. He always fought as ‘James Figg of Thame’ and was defeated just once in a career of 271 fights.
